The town of Chapel Hill has reached a deal with University Mall owner Madison Marquette to temporarily relocate the town’s public library to an empty anchor space at the mall until an expansion of the library’s building can be completed.

The library’s inventory of books and equipment will begin the move to University Mall in about six months, and town officials estimate the construction project will take about a year and a half. It will be located in space near the recently refurbished mall entrance across from the Harris Teeter grocery store and near the mall’s center stage.

Chapel Hill has been making plans to renovate and expand the Chapel Hill Public Library building at Pritchard Park since 2003, when Chapel Hill voters approved $16.26 million in bond funds to support the expansion project. Chapel Hill’s town council gave approval for the project to proceed in June. Sale of the bonds is scheduled for September. Construction is expected to begin in December.
